Born and brought up in a zamindar family in Bihar, she developed an interest in acting and writing at an early age and participated in stage performances, singing and cultural programmes. After completing her graduation in Bihar, Verma moved to Pune and continued her artistic activities before eventually moving to Mumbai with the ambition of becoming a lyricist. She subsequently established herself as a character artist in Hindi cinema, appearing in films including Dharam Sankat, Heer Ranjha, Kismat, Bal Brahmachari, Aag, Hero No. 1, Wajood and Haseena Maan Jayegi. Her performances were known for their natural and understated approach to character roles.
