She graduated from the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute (A. G. Burov's course) in 1984. While still in her fourth year, she began acting at the Sovremennik Theatre, and upon graduation, was accepted into its troupe. From 1991 to 1993, she worked at the Roman Viktyuk Theatre. Irina Metlitskaya also participated in productions at the Theatre of the Moon (in particular, playing Theodora in the play «Byzantium»).
